The copper-based catalysts is used industrially for important chemical
reactions such as the water-gas shift reaction, To gain microscopic understanding
of the catalyst, calculations based on the density functional theory are
applied[1] in investigation of the interaction of oxygen and copper, focusing
on the relative stability of surface oxide structures on Cu(111)[2], in
addition to comparison of the surface oxide to the bulk copper oxide. The
Gibbs free energy of each surface structure is evaluated in the calculation, taking
into account the temperature and the pressure shifted via change in the
oxygen chemical potential. The results show that oxygen does not form adlayers
on the Cu(111) surface but proceeds directly to the formation of surface
oxidic structures and stable bulk oxide phase in the oxidation.
