The first-principles calculation is now accepted as one of the most powerful techniques in theoretical material science. This is due to the success of the local density approximation (LDA), which describes a lot of ground state properties for a wide range of materials [1]. However, it has been recognized that the LDA predicts occupied d states at too high energy and this error causes some unfortunate predictions [2, 3]. Typical example is a case of La2-xSrxCuO4 which is known as one of the cuprate superconductors, and the anti-ferromagnetic insulating state of La2-xSrxCuO4 is not correctly reproduced by the LDA [4]. The self-interaction correction (SIC) method is one of the practical methods which have been proposed to correct the LDA predictions [2, 3].
In this presentation, I will explain first-principles calculations and show some examples of the LDA calculations. Then based on the calculated results on ZnO, I will discuss how the LDA results are corrected by introducing the SIC method. Finally, I will introduce La2CuO4 [4] and explain the purpose of my work.
