Vanadium dioxide (VO2), which is a typical correlated electron material, shows metal-insulator transition (MIT) with drastic change in conductivity by various external forces such as heat, light, electric field, strain and others. VO2 is a promising material for leading novel electronic devices. In this material, however, it is known that metallic and insulating domains with several tens nanometer in size often coexist randomly during the MIT. Thus the first order phase transition cannot be observed in the thin films. In nano-scale structures which are a comparable size with domain, however, sharp transitions in individual domains can be observed. In this presentation I will explain the nano-scale phase separation, and report my research in fabrication of VO2 nano-structures and nano-physical measurements.
