Electronic configurations of compounds having biradical characters, often called biradicaloids, are described as resonance hybrids of a closed-shell structure called Kekulé form and an open-shell biradical structure, because it is impossible to describe their proper electronic states by the valence bond method. Biradical compounds exhibit physical properties that closed-shell molecules do not. In this presentation, I will start with a brief explanation of compounds having biradical characters showing representative examples [1], followed by the preceding study on indeno[2,1-b]fluorene which was undertaken in Tobe Lab focusing on its extraordinary optical property [2]. I will end up with my own work on the synthesis of fluoreno[2,3-b]fluorene aiming at experimentally verifying the theoretical prediction derived from the preceding work.
